One of my favorite baseball throwing drills is the Chain Throw. This drill focuses on throwing longer, throwing to the glove hand side, receiving the ball correctly, and receiving and throwing the ball in one fluid motion.

Line up your players, with four players to a line, stretching from one foul line to the other.
Make three or four lines depending on how many players you have at practice.
The baseball starts at the left field line, is thrown to the player in left-center, then thrown to right-center, then to the right foul line and then the sequence is reversed.

When the ball makes it all the way back to the left foul line, the player drops the ball and all of the players rotate up one position with the player who started on the left foul line running all the way to the right foul line.

Once all of the players have rotated through each position in the chain this drill is done.

Here are two youth baseball fielding drills that are favorites. The focus of both drills is meant to help outfielders practice getting rid of the ball quicker.

You will need a stopwatch for the first drill and four cones.
Set the four cones in a square shape about 15 feet apart. Put the outfielder in the middle of the four cones.
Place a fielder about 20 to 40 yards away from the cones (depending on age level you’re coaching).
The coach throws a “fly ball” to the outfielder (it needs to be accurately done to land within the artificial square).

Start the stopwatch when the baseball hits the glove of the outfielder. Stop the time when the ball hits the glove of the cut-off man. Outfielders will enjoy trying to beat their own time as well as those of others.

You can coach curl hop, catching position, off-hand position, etc….

Another baseball drill that is good for outfield is this one for fielding ground balls.

Have your players charge all ground balls at full speed until about 15 feet from the ball, then slow charge so that they will have full control of their body and can release the ball in 1 ½ steps.

They need to keep their seat down when fielding ground balls. Keep their glove close to the ground. It is easier to bring the glove up than to get it down. Play all ground balls in front of the body and make sure the ball does not get past you.

This is one of our favorite baseball drills. It is called: Overhead Wall Ball. This baseball drill is used to teach how to catch a ball that goes overhead and past you. It can also be used by experienced players to perfect this skill.

* All you need is a wall (preferably a tall one), indoors or outdoors, and a rubber ball and glove.
* The player is positioned a few feet from the the wall facing it.
* The player throws the baseball up against the wall.
* The player must do the drop step and run to catch the ball that has gone over his/her head.
* The distance of the bounce off the wall is determined by the strength of the throw.

This baseball drill can also be done with a partner where the partner throws the ball for the other player. This works well as the receiver doesn’t know how hard the ball will be thrown.

If you’re looking for some free youth baseball drills, give this one a try. This is a baseball drill we do every day after everyone’s arm is warmed up. We call this drill Quick Hands.

Line up half of the team 30 to 40 ft apart from the other half of the team.
Give them one baseball and tell them to throw to the other side for three throws.
As soon as the last throw is thrown, the player yells out and the other player jumps in and vice versa for the other side.
All throws must be quick, hard and accurate.
Then call two and they go with two throws and sometimes one.

This drill has helped them with their throwing and catching and getting the ball out of the glove quickly. We usually do this for 5 minutes and the kids like the drill.

Roll and Catch
Catching baseball drill for instruction league
1- Have kids stand about 15 feet from the baseball coach
2- Coach will ask kid run about 5 feet and then drop the ground and “roll” over
3- As kid completes roll, he stands back on feet
4- At the point the kid returns to his feet, the coach throws him the baseball. Coach can throw in advance of the player in full standing position, so he can anticipate and react in an unbalanced situation.
5- Repeat drill

The other tip is for infield practice. Before infield practice I have the infield throw the ball around. Catcher throws to third, third to second, second to short, short to first, and first to home. I have them repeat this 3 times. I find that it helps fire the kids up and gets them ready to play!

This is one of those great baseball drills that works on a couple of things at the same time. As a baseball coach–we all like those!! I use this mostly for when I need my players to coach first base. I coach alone so of course I am on third!! Rotate the players through coaching and base running.

Set up:
Players lined up at the plate as the batter(just take off running)
One player acts as base coach.
1st baseman playing his position.
Coach is at the mound or somewhere in the close infield to make the throw to 1st.
1st baseman makes the play as usual while the base coach is telling the player to stay or go.
Coach can make the throw as easy or difficult as desired to challenge the first baseman. Base coach is telling the runner to go on an overthrown ball.

You can also add scenarios such as a bobbled baseball in the outfield, or errors at other bases. This is good baseball drill to start with and it teaches your players to be vocal while they are coaching 1st and is great work for the first baseman.

If you’re looking for fast-paced effective baseball fielding drills, try this one. It is a baseball drill that I have been using with my players to get them into a good fielding position, but it also is a memory drill.

Get a group of 6-8 players in a circle. Then, have 1 player in the middle of the circle (no glove). There should be about 10 – 12 feet from the playing in the middle, to the other players.

Two people on the opposite ends of the circle. When the baseball coach blows the whistle, 1 player will roll the ball to either the left or right of the player in the middle. The player will keep low, and on the balls of their feet, and retrieve the ground ball. He will then flip the ball to a player close to him. As he flips the baseball, the 2nd player with a ball will roll another grounder. The player in the middle must field that ball, and flip it to a close player. The player in the middle must now remember where he flipped the earlier ball, and get ready to field the ball.

The players continue this baseball drill for 30 seconds. You want to work so that your players can work up to 60 seconds.

This drill makes sure the players are staying low, and moving their feet to get to the ball.

These baseball practice drills are a couple of the tried and true ones. They have been around a long time because they WORK. Give them a try!

The first baseball drill is a relay drill that focuses on the long hit where the short stop or the second baseman have to go to into the outfield to relay the baseball to home plate or second base.

I also do hits down the lines so that the third baseman and first baseman get practice too. I’ll hit or throw the ball deep into the outfield getting the infielders into relay position. The outfielder catches or gets the ball then throws it to the cutoff man who turns and throws it to the catcher or second base which ever the team needs work on. Start out slow so they understand what needs to happen and where they need to go. Then back up and pick up the pace. Until you just stand at home plate and tell them which base to bring the ball to. Randomly hit the ball deep.

Another one is a baseball fielding drill for pop-flies. The fielders stand with their backs to you and you start out throwing the ball to them. You throw the up into the air like a pop-up, as you throw the ball you yell “ball!” The fielder turns around and finds the ball and catches it.

Don’t throw the ball right at the player, you’re not trying to hit them. As the fielders get more experienced at this you can back up and/or start hit the ball to them.

This really develops the fielders ability to follow the ball and judge its flight path, increasing his ability to catch the ball.

One of my favorite baseball drills are speed drills. They are best done with three to four baseball fielders. It can be done on the infield or the outfield.

Get about 20-30 yards between you and the fielders. Have someone catching for you for safety. Have three or four balls whatever you can handle.

Start throwing ground balls to the players having them return them as fast as they can. Throw them to the sides, bouncers, one hoppers, line drives, mix it up. Keep going until you are tired. You can back off and bat the balls to them too. Just depends on the skill level of the baseball players.

At first you want to make sure the fielders are using proper form for both catching and throwing. You throw short and have them charge the baseball or long and back off, pop-ups whatever you would expect to see in a game.

This is a baseball drill you use when you have a couple of assistant coaches, or even players themselves, can run it. Great fast paced effective drill!

If you're looking for baseball fielding drills that specifically target fielding bunt balls, try this drill. This is a pitchers' fielding practice drill that is sometimes called Roll the Dice.

If you’re looking for baseball fielding drills that specifically target fielding bunt balls, try this drill. This is a pitchers’ fielding practice drill that is sometimes called Roll the Dice.

Pitchers’ Fielding Practice – Fielding Bunt Balls
Have your pitcher(s) on the mound.
Coach throws out 5 baseballs along the 3rd base line from home plate simulating bunted balls.
Pitcher goes through his motion from set or windup–dry or live.
Pitcher goes and fields the furthest ball from home plate first, throws ball to 1st base.
Same pitcher then goes through the same process until all 5 balls are fielded.
The next pitcher goes through the same routine.

You can then use this same baseball drill down the 1st base line.
It also works as good aerobic exercise for pitchers.
