Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Encourage focusing on the basics of fielding and throwing mechanics. Proper glove work and foot positioning can make the transition smoother.
  • Stress the importance of quick, but secure glove-to-hand transfers. Practice drills that enhance their ability to swiftly move the ball from glove to throwing hand.
  • Introduce the concept of visualizing the play before it happens to improve reaction time and decision-making during game situations.
  • Emphasize precision in throwing to the correct location for the catcher and first baseman to receive the ball in the optimal position for tags and catches.
  • Work on agility drills for infielders to improve their quickness in getting to the ball and positioning their body for an efficient throw.
  • Practice communication between the third baseman, catcher, and shortstop first baseman to ensure smooth execution of the double play under pressure.
