The hardest part about hitting a baseball isn’t mechanics, it’s timing. By altering the speed of the pitch, a baseball pitcher can disrupt a hitter’s timing, leading to more strike outs. In today’s video tutorial, we share some excellent tips for teaching your young pitchers how to successfully alter their pitching speed and throw off a hitter’s timing and balance.
The secret to good hitting is timing, so the batter must be kept off balance. A pitcher can disrupt a hitter’s timing by throwing the ball at different speeds with the same motion. The hitter who is kept off balance never seems to get his pitch. the key to containing good hitters is to get ahead of them and not give them anything good. Get the hitter looking for one thing, and then give them something else. If a hitter faces a pitcher who can alter his pitch speed, there are physical and mental adjustments that must take place. The basic prinicple is that if a pitcher can throw the fastball by a hitter, then the hitter must start his load/stride process sooner to maintain his tempo. The worst thing that can happen to a hitter that faces a faster pitcher, is to try to “speed up” himself. That makes the pitch seem faster than it already is, and forces mechanics to break down.
