Purpose:
This drill helps players practice executing rundowns efficiently after a pickoff move with a runner on second base.

Setup:

  • Pitcher positioned on the pitcher’s mound.
  • Second baseman (2B) at second base.
  • Shortstop (SS) positioned between second and third base.
  • A runner at second base taking a lead.

Execution:

  1. The runner on second takes their lead as if preparing to advance to third base.
  2. The pitcher performs a pickoff move to second base as the runner breaks for third.
  3. The second baseman (2B) and shortstop (SS) work together to execute the rundown.
  4. The pitcher runs behind the shortstop to provide backup during the play.

Coaching Tips:

  • Try to limit the rundown to one or two throws. Chase the runner in the direction they are initially heading, usually forward, to reduce the number of throws and chances for errors.
  • The exception to this method occurs when a runner is caught between third base and home plate. If the runner passes the halfway point, the third baseman should throw to home plate to begin the rundown back toward third base, minimizing the risk of a mistake that could allow a run to score.

Coaching Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Teach players to stay calm during rundowns and focus on accuracy rather than speed when making throws.
  • Use verbal cues like “close the gap” or “keep him moving” to encourage defenders to run the runner down without hesitation.
  • Reinforce the importance of clear communication between fielders, such as calling “I’ve got ball” or “throw now.”

Coaching Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Focus on footwork and positioning—defenders should close the distance with quick, controlled steps while staying balanced to make accurate throws.
  • Emphasize the importance of making the runner commit to a direction before making a throw to eliminate indecision.
  • Teach the backup fielder (e.g., pitcher) to stay alert and ready to field an errant throw or continue the rundown seamlessly if needed.
