Purpose:
To develop infielders’ ability to execute efficient double plays in high-pressure game situations. This drill focuses on building quick reflexes, smooth transitions, accurate throws, and effective communication between the third baseman (3B), shortstop (SS), second baseman (2B), and first baseman (1B). By practicing the 5-4-3 and 4-6-3 double plays, players will enhance their decision-making, coordination, and teamwork to ensure they can turn double plays successfully during games.

Setup:

  • Position a coach with a Fungo bat slightly to the left side of home plate to create the optimal angle for hitting ground balls to the infielders.
  • Place the 3B, SS, 2B, and 1B in their regular defensive positions on the field.
  • Ensure that 2B and SS are prepared to cover second base depending on where the ground ball is hit.
  • Use multiple baseballs for efficiency, allowing quick resets after each double-play attempt.
  • Make sure the players understand the sequence of the drill and the specific double plays being practiced, with verbal reminders about the play call (5-4-3 or 4-6-3) before each ground ball is hit.

Execution:

  1. Fungo 1 hits a ground ball to 3B.
  2. 3B fields it, throws to 2B covering second, who throws to 1B for a 5-4-3 double play.
  3. Return ball to Fungo 1 and reset.
  4. Fungo 1 hits a ground ball to 2B.
  5. 2B fields it, throws to SS covering second, who throws to 1B for a 4-6-3 double play.
  6. Return ball to Fungo 1 and reset.

Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Focus on getting the fundamentals right by ensuring a clean fielding position—glove down, butt low, and eyes on the ball. Encourage younger players to stay balanced and ready to make a quick, accurate throw.
  • Reinforce the importance of communication. Younger players should call out their throws loudly, such as “second!” or “first!” to help teammates anticipate the play and execute it smoothly.
  • Emphasize footwork around the base, particularly for the player covering second. Encourage them to practice proper foot placement on the base to avoid collisions and make a quick, controlled throw to first.

Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Focus on quick transitions and soft hands. Older players should practice fielding the ball smoothly, transferring it quickly from the glove to the throwing hand for a faster double play.
  • Challenge them to anticipate the play before it happens. Encourage reading the batter’s tendencies or the game situation to adjust positioning and be prepared to react quickly.
  • Reinforce the need for precise throws, particularly to the chest area of the receiver. Emphasize the importance of maintaining accuracy while throwing under pressure to ensure the double play is successfully completed.
