Purpose:

Full team practices a double cutoff for a ball hit into the right field gap

Setup:

• Full infield and outfield in regular positions
• Coach with fungo bat at home plate

What is a Double Cut?

A double cut is a strategy used when a ball is hit to the outfield wall and there will be a long throw in. Two infielders act as cutoffs to help relay the ball in to a base.

The “lead” cutoff runs into the shallow outfield and receives the throw from the outfielder. The “trail” cutoff stands in line with the lead, around 10 to 20 feet behind him. He acts as the backup for the throw and gets to any balls the lead cutoff is unable to handle.

Execution

  1.  Fungo 1 hits a line drive into the right field gap
  2. 2B is the lead cutoff for the throw to third
  3. SS has the trail, standing 15-30 feet behind the lead, in line with third base
  4. If the ball sails over or short hops past the lead, the trail retrieves it and completes the relay to 3B
  5. 1B is the cutoff for the throw to home
  6. Pitcher backs up between third and home, and moves according to the throw
  7. Return ball to Fungo 1. Reset and repeat.
